My Story
For me, colouring started in 2010 while strolling through a local outdoor market. One of the vendors was selling highly detailed black & white collages of my two favourite cities, Victoria and Vancouver, British Columbia. These were extremely intricate, hand drawn collages you can get lost in for hours. My first thought, "what an incredibly detailed drawing!!" My second thought, "these would look amazing in colour!" The hook was set.
I purchased copies of each collage and headed to the nearest art store to purchase every fine point permanent coloured marker I could find. With pleasure, I spent over 50 hours colouring each piece but I was already thinking, "what next?" The answer was found in airports and art supply stores, and into the world of "adult colouring". After years of colouring other people's work, mostly those of reknowned Canadian illustator and concept artist Steve McDonald and his amazing colouring books, I began the search for other sources and projects. If you haven't already, search online for Steve McDonald, Canadian illustrator. His creations are amazing and extremely fun to colour!
My thought of "what next?" got answered for me literally wrapped in a Christmas present in 2022, for drawing lessons! I learned there is skill, technique and patience involved in drawing and every drawing is a unique expression of the artist. I also learned there is no wrong way to draw, or colour. With practice and patience, anyone can draw, and colour. Getting lost in creating a new piece, taking an idea and transferring it from mind to paper, is what I enjoy. The other gift of colouring? It is very difficult to think about other things going on in life when you are consumed by drawing or colouring. When I colour I add Podcasts (usually "Smartless") or music.
There is an artist in everyone. Follow your bliss!

My Work
So far I have completed four hand drawn and coloured original pieces, hoping to complete a new original piece every month. I have also coloured over 100 pages from various colouring books I have purchased and one album cover, so far, all using a combination of Sharpie and BIC fine point markers.
What I've learned through my various colouring projects is the almost cerebral process of working through different colour choices, balancing the concentration of colours and visualizing the final product.

Originals
My original pieces below are all drawn and coloured by hand with each piece taking any where from 40 to 50 hours to complete. I use 100% recycled paper and ONLY Sharpie and BIC fine point permanent markers. Printed copies are available for purchase and shipped anywhere. I can also print any of these originals on an item of your choice and ship it to you. See more details below.
" Teenage Love "
Drawing lesson #4 for me was focused on perspective drawings. The art of drawing solid objects on a two dimensional surface so as to give the right impression of their height, width, depth and position in relation to each other, when viewed from a particular point called a vanishing point. Amazing to see an image seemingly come right off the page! Nothing quite like teenage love to pull one into a world where that is all you see!

" Cloudy With A Chance
Of Popcorn "
I've learned the importance of creative flow and not worrying about how perfect an object is drawn, focusing more on the feel of how a marker moves in your hand and across the paper. While learning about creating and drawing objects during my drawing course the first shape that came to mind was popcorn...no idea why. It evolved into something Forrest Gump-esq, "I drew one piece, then another, then another, and...well...I just kept going."

" The Vinyl Solution "
Sometimes ideas are right in front of you. It helps that I live in one of the most walkable cities in the world. The more you slow down, the more you see. I only know these as 45 rpm adapters which I found on the sidewalk. I thought there was another name for these things. Anyone out there know? The ones on top were individually traced first, before the second layer of adapters were added. A friend of mine wants to use this to print on the liner of his pool!! Whatever works for ya!

" Driving In Montreal "
I love Montreal, I really do. I know many people there and have made visits since Guy Lafleur's rookie season. However, driving in that city, to me, is a mystery wrapped inside another mystery and always has been. During a recent visit my experience driving around, what will always be to me the Dorval International Airport, was an equally weighted combination of painful and comical. "Driving In Montreal" represents what I saw, felt and experienced that day, adding some creative interpretation of course. Everything was drawn by hand with the aid of templates. Randomly placed exclamation points were added in lieu of the actual words I used that day. Mon dieu! Enjoy the ride!

Originals
(un-coloured)
The creative process, for me any way, is very different between creating an original drawing from scratch and choosing or balancing what colours should go where. I draw what I believe will creatively challenge me to find the right balance of colours. My creations are not nearly as interesting as cityscapes, mandalas, lions or dragons. These are everyday objects you see everywhere. The enjoyment for me is finding and recreating the image followed by the relaxation of precision colouring.

" The Vinyl Solution " (uncoloured)
You will no doubt notice this is NOT the same piece as the coloured version of "The Vinyl Solution". Simple reason for that. Colouring the top layer of 45 adapters first made it a lot easier to trace the adapters underneath, like, way easier!

" Cloudy With A Chance Of Popcorn "
(uncoloured)
The uncoloured versionI of "Cloudy With A Chance Of Popcorn". I went with a more traditional popcorn colour scheme, including the blue background, reminiscent of the old days visiting Cineplex Odeon theatres. The popcorn colour possibilites here are endless. What would your "crazy coloured popcorn" look like? Hmmm...I may have to colour this one again too!

" Teenage Love "
(uncoloured)
This was my first original perspective piece, created shortly after completing my drawing course. This version is not the same as the coloured version. It had to be redone as I coloured the first version "before" I scanned it. Oops! I like this version better and may have to colour it too! How would you colour this?

Album Covers
I have started to do album covers with one completed and two more ideas pending.

Colouring Portfolio
The coloured pages below are a sample of what I have done so far. These are the original colourings I've completed from various adult colouring books I have purchased over the years. The first two pieces show the cityscapes of Victoria and Vancouver, the ones that got me introduced to the world of adult colouring, now framed and hanging in my home. These exceptional hand drawn collages were created by Darryl Albert. Darryl is located in beautiful British Columbia, Canada and was the vendor I met at the local street market. For more about Darryl and his work - https://www.facebook.com/tinmansign/.
Adult colourings books are everywhere now and I am always on the lookout for new projects. For now I am focused on creating my own original drawings to colour. I am also available, for a negotiated fixed price, to colour something for you! Perhaps colouring is not your thing, but you have something in black & white which could look quite stunning with shots of colour added. I am already doing this for people.

If you are interested in purchasing any of the original coloured pages shown below, please send me a note to the email address below. Copies, reprints or JPEG's of these colouring pages or album covers which were not created by me are NOT for sale, only the original colourings I did. The prices below are all in Canadian dollars.
